FiveNew Orleans universities were investigated by the AAUP Special Committee after Hurricane Katrina: Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO), the LSU Health Science Center (LSUHSC), Tulane, the University of New Orleans (UNO) and Loyola. All but LSUHSC, where active negotiations were underway, were censured at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the association for “nearly universal departure from (and in some cases complete abandonment of) personnel and other policies.”
At the 2008 Annual Meeting, Committee A reported being able to remove LSUHSC from its active agenda on the basis of the corrective actions taken there.
In addition, the Council of Representatives voted to accept Committee A’s recommendation to remove SUNO from the censure list on the basis of resolving issues there as well.
At Tulane, Jordan Kurland, AAUP Associate General Secretary, reported positive steps: amended principles and procedures regarding financial exigency being considered for inclusion in the Faculty Handbook, and the settlement of a suit by a former tenured faculty member at the medical school. Two faculty members seeking re-instatement remain. AAUP has requested, but not obtained clarification of whether the University would seek to invoke removal of censure as material in litigation that might be brought by these faculty.
At UNO, Kurland reports good progress in resolving contested cases of furloughed individual professors and AAUP’s proposal of specific policy changes to UNO policies on financial exigency. He has written Chancellor Ryan urging an attempt to reach an agreement on suitable changes.
In short, only at Loyola University has there been a failure to move in the direction of resolving the issue |
